Auto-tiling & terrain
Auto-tiling picks the right tile automatically based on its neighbours, so you paint a shape and Ambersprite chooses the correct edge, corner and inner tiles.
Set it up#
- In the Tileset editor, give each tile a Role — this groups the tiles that belong to the same terrain (e.g. all your grass tiles).
- Open the Tool rail ▸ Grid (or context bar) and choose a terrain mode:
| Mode | Label | Tiles needed |
|---|---|---|
| Off | TER OFF | Manual stamping only. |
| Edge | TER EDGE | 4-bit set — connects along edges. |
| Corner | TER CORN | Corner-matched set. |
| Mixed | TER MIX | Edge + corner. |
| Blob (47) | TER 47 | Full 47-tile blob set — every neighbour combination. |
- Also set the tile preview guide (
TILE 3X3/TILE ISO/TILE HEX) so you can see the auto-tile grid.
Paint#
With a terrain mode on, stamping a tile of that role makes Ambersprite re-evaluate the surrounding cells and swap in the matching variant. Erase a cell and its neighbours re-fix themselves.
Random tiles#
Turn on Random Tile to have the pencil pick a weighted-random variant from the tiles that share the current role — good for scattering grass tufts and rubble without repetition. Adjust each tile's Probability in the Tileset editor.
Ambersprite auto-tiles from a set you supply — it does not yet generate the transition tiles for you. Draw one clean edge tile, then use Flip / Rotate in the Tileset editor to derive the other orientations quickly.
